Lightning Talks: Calling All Developers!

Sent: 9/24/2015 11:20:30 AM
We need YOU to bring your laptop and share your pearls of software development wisdom.

This month's meeting will be Wednesday, September 30, and we're looking to YOU for some developer participation. Do you use something interesting in your development process that you could talk about for a short period (say 10-20 minutes)? As developers, we tend to think that things we do/use may not be interesting to others. That's SO not true. I bet you use something every day that other developers could benefit from hearing about. Maybe it's a specific tool, or pattern, or technology. For instance, maybe you love C# extension methods and are willing to share your wisdom about them. Or maybe you're using something new like ASP.NET 5, Entity Framework 7, or Visual Studio Code - - and are willing to simply share your experience with it. You can have slides, or better yet, you can do a demonstration. I bet you know something that other developers could benefit from hearing about.

To do a "lightning talk" please sign-up by sending a few sentences of description on your topic and send it to Adam Barney (adam@adambarney.com) or Stephen Kennedy (SKennedy@assurity.com).

=== DO NOT REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH YOUR IDEA ===

Long story - not worth telling. Just send it to Adam or Steve at the email addresses above and we'll get you on the list.

=== MOVING ON... ===

If you plan to code or demonstrate or present your idea, bring your laptop. The room is equipped with Wi-Fi and most major visual and audio interfaces including VGA, HDMI, Display Port/Mini Display Port.

Here is a random list of possible topics for consideration. But feel free to ignore this list, and talk about anything else.

* Coding Practices
* UI/UX
* Bootstrap
* JavaScript
* LINQ
* Entity Framework
* Grunt or Gulp
* How to use Plnkr
* Why NoSQL?
* Why I hate Apple / Microsoft / Google
* Game coding
* Working with SignalR
* How to manage devs.
* What I learned while at XYZ conference

This Month: Agile Requirements Workshop

You have been assigned to a new software project at your organization, but now what? Do you jump in and start programming or create project plans and charters?

Join me for this session where you will participate in a structured brainstorming process to help get a new project off the ground. Our case study will be a complete re-write of the Lincoln .Net Users Group website. Come to the meeting prepared to discuss what you would want out of a user group website, and what you think other interested parties would want. By the end of the night you will have learned a process that will help you develop a prioritized backlog and basic plan for starting the construction phase of a software development project. You will also get a free month pass to Pluralsight where you can learn more about this process and access the thousands of other videos in their collection.

Speaker: Rusty Divine

Rusty is a team lead and Pluralsight author who has been a .Net software developer for many years. He lives in Lincoln and enjoys brewing beer and grilling gourmet burgers.

This Month: A Conversation About SOLID

Please join me as I lead us through a conversation on design practices with the S.O.L.I.D software design principles. SOLID is an acronym for the first five object-oriented design(OOD) principles by Robert C. Martin, popularly known as Uncle Bob. In this month's meeting, I will be discussing the fundamental meaning of each part of SOLID. If you haven't heard of SOLID, then this will be a great introduction. If you have some expertise in understanding and using SOLID, then I hope you'll be able to contribute to a great conversation about it.

Speaker: Steve Kennedy

I’m primarily a .NET developer with better skills in eating, drinking, and getting distracted. I’ve raised a 19 year old daughter who I help become a .NET developer – she’s never forgiven me. I’m 50/50 on giving presentations without cursing profusely - my apologies in advance.

I started writing software in 1996 using Turbo Pascal and Delphi. I’m passionate about good software design practices, and have an affinity for simplicity in architecture. Now, I enjoy keeping up with the latest and greatest Microsoft technologies. I believe in giving back to my community, and continuous learning. I enjoy spending time with my family - it’s my number one priority. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with Microsoft Release Management and Visual Studio Tools for Docker.

This Month: The Importance of Web Performance

Web Performance is important. I'll prove it to you. All levels matter, the speed of the page loading, and the interactions once downloaded. All levels of a users interaction must be fluid and smooth. If not, you have created the chance to lose your market. In this talk, we'll discuss the necessities for performance, and in a general web and JavaScript sense discuss what can be done in your daily coding to make simple, performant improvements.
